Only one person can ensure you maintain a healthy smile and that person is you. Oral health is just as important as the health of the rest of your body. Untreated dental disease can lead to serious health problems, such as infection, damage to bone or nerves, and tooth loss. Infection from dental disease can spread to other parts of the body that can even lead to death.
You can practice preventive dentistry yourself by adopting these healthy habits:
- Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day
- Floss between your teeth once a day
- Eat a balanced diet
- Limit between-meal snacks
- Go to the dentist for regular check-ups
At Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC, we will help ensure a beautiful smile that lasts your lifetime.
Best Candidates for Mouth Guards
Houston, TX residents of every age should get a dental exam every year. Some of the most common dental conditions, such as periodontal disease (the top reason for tooth loss), do not have signs you can see. If concerns are noticed early, you are more likely to have better outcomes with treatment.
The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that children visit a dentist before they turn one. We can talk to you about common problems, including using pacifiers, teething, and baby bottle tooth decay. Our skilled team at Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC can teach you ways to clean and care for your baby's oral health so that he or she can start developing good habits early in life. Dental examinations are also crucial for older children as their teeth, gums, and jaw develop. Essentially, everyone needs to care for their teeth and gums.
Oral Cancer Screening
We provide oral cancer screening for every patient. Each dental examination at Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC will include a screening for oral cancer to check for any symptoms, including inflammation, sores, lesions, and lumps. Dr. Macaluso will also feel your neck and jaw for abnormal growths. Oral cancer is an abnormal group of cells that can develop in the mouth, which includes the gums, jawbone, lips, tongue, throat, and salivary glands. Should any areas of concern be discovered, a biopsy can be done or we can refer you to see an oral cancer specialist.
What To Expect with Dental Exam
Your appointment will begin with a cursory evaluation of your teeth, gums, tongue, throat, the roof of your mouth, inside your cheeks, and other checkpoints. This includes assessing any symptoms of oral cancer. A member of our team will take you to have digital x-rays and then check for abnormal gum tissue.
Dr. Macaluso will evaluate your teeth, gums, tongue, bite, and temporomandibular joints (for TMJ). He will check any restorations you have, such as bridges and dentures, to assess the wear and fit. Dr. Macaluso may ask about your medical and dental history, other medical conditions you may have, prescriptions you are taking, and more before making treatment recommendations. He will then discuss any concerns he discovered and the next steps.
Dental Exam Follow-Up
When your follow-up appointment should be scheduled will be based on the results of your exam. If Dr. Macaluso doesn't find any problems, then you can continue with your at-home oral care routine with flossing and brushing every day, your yearly dental examination, and twice-yearly professional cleanings at Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC. If he does find anything that needs to be treated, procedures can be reviewed and planned.
