Reviews
Best Candidates
Professional fluoride treatments may be administered to all patients, although it is typically given to children whose teeth are developing or who have not developed good oral hygiene habits. Dr. Macaluso also suggests professional fluoride treatments for older patients who don't have a fluoridated water supply or if the patient is prone to rapid tooth decay. Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC provides different formulas of fluoride if you have special concerns, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for patients with restorations (crowns and bridges). We also offer a choice of flavors to make treatments easier for all.
What to Expect
Professional fluoride treatments are generally applied twice a year following your dental cleaning. When you select your flavor, your dental hygienist will begin to prepare your fluoride treatment as a foam, gel, or paint-on varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for several minutes so the fluoride can sink into your enamel, then it can be removed. A suction tool may be used to help remove any excess fluoride after the procedure since you cannot rinse out your mouth, drink, or eat for at least half an hour after.
Follow-Up
Stomach problems may take place if you swallow any fluoride; however, this will usually subside in about one day after your treatment. In certain patients, Dr. Macaluso may recommend fluoride tablets to use between treatments. Since it is toxic in large doses, you need to be cautious and prevent children from getting these supplements. Although they will strengthen the teeth, you will still need to have a regular oral care routine at home by using a toothpaste with fluoride and flossing. You also need to scheduled professional exams and cleanings at Michael A. Macaluso, D.D.S., PC for our skilled team to continue to assess the need for professional fluoride treatments.
